Formed in Dundee, Scotland in 1979, The Associates were comprised of vocalist Billy Mackenzie and multi-instrumentalist Alan Rankine. Drawing from a diverse range of influences including art rock, glam, and disco, the duo achieved early success with their debut album "The Affectionate Punch" in 1981. "Sulk" was acclaimed as the album of the year by Melody Maker upon its release. This limited edition 40th Anniversary Bookpack commemorates "Sulk" with the original album remastered on 140g Blue Vinyl and 3CDs containing the original album, out-takes, monitor mixes, rarities, Peel sessions, and a previously unreleased live show from Gigant in the Netherlands from 1981. The 12" Bookpack also includes exclusive sleevenotes by journalist Simon Reynolds, along with interviews with Alan Rankine, Michael Dempsey, Mike Hedges, and Martha Ludley, as well as unseen photography by Derek Reid, Tom Sheehan, and Eveline Dröge. Reflecting on "Sulk," Billy Mackenzie expressed that it was a true liberation for him, encapsulating the essence of his artistry and allowing him to "create [his] own sunshine."
