Around the Fur, the follow-up to Deftones' passionate and aggressive album, Adrenaline, showcases the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work. The album introduces new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening track, "My Own Summer (Shove It)," sets the tone with sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternating with fast, violent crunch. "Headup" features a guest appearance by Sepultura's Max Cavalera on guitar and vocals, while "MX" sees singer Chino sharing vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, wife of Deftones' drummer Abe, offering an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocalist Moreno demonstrates his versatility by delivering breathy, psychotic recitations that sound almost industrial, as well as showcasing his gift for haunting melodies during the album's calmer, more brooding moments. Guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is both muscular and agile, providing a powerful backdrop to Moreno's vocal acrobatics. When the band's intense fury reaches its peak, Moreno's screams are described as otherworldly, propelling the album into a relentless juggernaut of aggression. This LP version is pressed on 180-gram vinyl.
