Released 2021, Australia
Composer and saxophonist Brian Brown is known for producing some of the most refined Australian jazz recordings during the 1970s. His music blends modern jazz with elements of free experimentation, creating a distinct impressionist sound. One of his notable works is the 1975 concept album "Carlton Streets," which captures the essence of the once-bohemian Melbourne neighborhood through a jazz lens. Contrasting his eco-jazz composition "Wildflowers" featured on the recent Roundtable compilation "Pyramid Pieces," "Carlton Streets" delves into urban environments, offering jazz interpretations of city life. Drawing inspiration from avant-garde composers and electric jazz innovators like early Weather Report and Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi, the album showcases a fusion of jazz-rock groove, free improvisation, and experimental textures. Reminiscent of pioneering jazz-rock groups such as Ian Carr's Nucleus and mid-period Soft Machine, "Carlton Streets" is a mosaic of musical exploration. The Roundtable is proud to present a new edition of this landmark Australian jazz recording, meticulously restored from the original master tapes. This special release for Record Store Day 2021 comes in a gatefold sleeve with liner notes and rare photos, offering a comprehensive experience of Brian Brown's visionary work.
