Collaborating primarily with Walter Afanasieff, Carey took more control over the album's musical direction and composition, marking the beginning of her musical and vocal transformation. Despite facing creative differences with her label and then-husband Tommy Mottola during production, "Daydream" remains a pivotal album in Carey's career.
