Originally recorded in 1977, following a limited release in 1979, Ghédalia Tazartès' debut album, "Diasporas," introduced listeners to the surreal, mysterious, and truly unclassifiable artistry of Tazartès within the French avant-garde canon. Born in Paris in 1947 to Judaeo-Spanish parents of Greek descent, Tazartès embarked on his career as an autodidact, leveraging his expertise in repetition and collage, along with his Ladino linguistic heritage, to craft some of the most distinctive recordings of the late 20th century.
The interest in Tazartès' work surged notably when artist Steve Stapleton included his subsequent album, "Tazartès' Transports," in his renowned "Nurse With Wound List," adding a layer of intrigue to the enigmatic persona of Tazartès. From the commencement of "Diasporas," looping incantations accumulate under Tazartès' direction. His unique utilization of tape loops to preserve the vanishing traditions of his family's heritage creates an atmospheric depth that unexpectedly complements his cut-up, manipulated vocal explorations.
While his contemporaries in the French avant-garde scene navigated academic theory and established traditions, "Diasporas" diverges from these
