For the last 30 years, Medeski Martin & Wood have explored the boundaries of modern jazz, incorporating hip hop, avant-garde, world music, and electronic funk influences into their fearless improvisational style. The title of this album is taken from the first line of "Old Angel Midnight" by Jack Kerouac, himself a legendary improviser. Released in 1995, "Friday Afternoon in the Universe" offers a diverse musical journey where influences of mid-'70s Miles Davis can be heard in an ever-changing sonic palette. Tracks like "Chubb Sub," a favorite featured in the Get Shorty soundtrack, showcase the group's ability to groove even in their most abstract compositions.
