The debut collaborative album by Automatisme (Canadian producer William Jourdain) and Swiss field recordist, visual artist, writer/academic, and psychogeographer Stefan Paulus is a unique exploration of soundscapes. The album, titled Gap/Void, is a result of their shared projects with Mille Plateaux/Force Inc, including contributions to the Ultrablack Of Music anthology.
Based on field recordings captured by Paulus during mountain expeditions in the Swiss Alps, the Caucasus, and the Arctic Circle, Gap/Void captures the essence of stormy weather, high alpine winds, avalanches, and the mysterious sounds from glaciers, crevices, and caves. Paulus intricately weaved these recordings into hundreds of layers of sound, akin to the geological strata of their origins, before passing them on to Jourdain for his unique Automatisme techniques.
Gap/Void features five rhythmic tracks at 33rpm LP, showcasing Automatisme's distinctive digital synthesis and innovative signal processing. This is followed by five companion tracks where Paulus' original ambient and drone works are reprocessed by Automatisme, creating a mesmerizing auditory experience. The album is available on CD/DL and LP download card.
Drawing inspiration from Chain Reaction, Gap/Void aims to recreate the adventurous spirit of Paulus' mountain climbs. This album adds another dimension to Jourdain's extensive collection of recent solo and collaborative works, showcasing his evolution from the variable tempo
