Harari, formerly known as The Beaters, was a South African band that made a significant impact with their afro-rock/funk/fusion style. Renaming themselves during a tour through Rhodesia in 1976, the band drew inspiration from African influences and the independence struggle. They were pioneers in the local music scene, being the first black pop/rock band to appear on South African TV. Harari's sound, often labeled as 'Afro-rock', was a fusion of funk- and rock-inspired rhythms with African roots. The band's evolution in both music and image reflected their deep connection to pan-African politics and cultural movements like the Black Panther Movement and Black Consciousness. Their album "Genesis" from 1977 showcases their signature style with explosive jams, vocal harmonies, and Afro-centric fusions. With mesmerizing drum-grooves, psychedelic improvisations, and catchy Afrobeat rhythms, this record is a must-have for collectors and fans alike. Harari's legacy lies in their ability to blend traditional African sounds with various genres, creating a unique and coherent musical experience.
