'Giving the World Away' is the sophomore album from Hatchie, offering a true introduction to the songwriter/bassist Harriette Pilbeam. Produced by Jorge Elbrecht, this album represents Hatchie's most thunderous and sprawling work to date. With input from longtime collaborator Joe Agius and percussion from Beach House drummer James Barone, the album combines celestial, shimmering shoegaze and pop sensibilities with a higher energy level. Inspired by '90s trip-hop and acid house influences, the album showcases a structured and ornate musicality. Despite initial intentions for a more high-energy direction, Pilbeam's introspection during the Covid lockdowns in Australia led to a theme of dismantling internalized shame and finding self-confidence. 'Giving the World Away' explores themes of self-discovery and gratitude, reflecting on young adulthood and embracing vulnerability.
