All of the excellent songs on this twelve-song album are beautifully written by Sturgill Simpson, except for the last couple of tracks which are written by Ray Cline/Ralph Stanley and Steven Fromholz, respectively. This provides insight into Simpson's roots and direction for those unfamiliar with his work. Simpson's own songs are of equal quality to those of the aforementioned greats, delving into tales of life such as lost love, the struggles of a musician, and the hardships of a coal mining community. Produced by Dave Cobb and recorded at various locations in Nashville, this album stands out from typical Nashville country music with its genuine hard edge that becomes apparent upon closer listening. While it may serve as pleasant background music for some, a more attentive listen reveals a sparse recording devoid of the polished smoothness often found in country music. The band, showcasing great skill and restraint, features Sturgill on lead vocals, acoustic guitar, and Telecaster, Hargus "Pig" Robbins on piano, Chris Powell on drums, Robby Turner on steel guitar, Brian "Freedom Eagle Bear" Allen on bass for select tracks, Bobby "Diamond Bob" Emmett on organ and mellotron, Leroy Powell on steel guitar for specific tracks, and Dave Cobb on 12-string electric guitar.
