Dar Williams' lyrics are filled with bouquets of optimism, set to melodies that effortlessly shift between captivating lightness and subtle gravity. She firmly believes in the inherent power and potential within each of us, rejecting the notion of exceptionalism that urges us to gaze at distant stars while feeling small and insignificant. This album reflects Williams' contemplation on the idea that there are moments when we simply cannot control our future. Despite tracking most of the album with longtime producer Stewart Lerman in November 2019, the title track was recorded in Woodstock in late February 2020 with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell. The unexpected events of 2020, including a delay in mixing due to Campbell falling ill with COVID-19, reinforced the album's theme of embracing life as it unfolds.
