Vinyl LP pressing. 2021 release. This album marks Thile's first truly solo endeavor, featuring only his voice and mandolin. The record includes six original songs and three covers, all of which delve into themes of spirituality. Recorded in a converted church in upstate New York during the pandemic, the focal point of 'Laysongs' is the three-part "Salt (in the Wounds) of the Earth," inspired by C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters. Additionally, the album showcases a track dedicated to Dionysus, a rendition of the fourth movement of Béla Bartók's Sonata for Solo Violin, "God Is Alive, Magic Is Afoot" based on Buffy Sainte-Marie's adaptation of a Leonard Cohen poem, a cover of Hazel Dickens' "Won't You Come and Sing for Me," and an original instrumental piece loosely inspired by J.S. Bach's Partita for Solo Violin in E Major.
