In the midst of a global pandemic, John Hiatt entered Historic RCA Studio B to explore a lifetime of leftover feelings. Fifty years ago, Hiatt resided in a modest room on Nashville’s 16th Avenue, near the iconic RCA and Columbia studios of “Music Row.” Over the ensuing five decades, he evolved from a struggling artist to a revered master of songwriting.
For his album "Leftover Feelings," Hiatt collaborated with the multi-Grammy-winning artist and producer Jerry Douglas and his band, The Jerry Douglas Band. Despite the absence of a drummer, the music resonates with depth and authenticity. The up-tempo tracks showcase Hiatt’s trademark clever wordplay and subtle intensity, while the Jerry Douglas Band's sensitive musicianship draws out remarkably vulnerable performances from Hiatt.
Leftover feelings often linger unresolved, persisting despite repeated introspection. Explored within a historical and comforting setting, these emotions take on a sacred quality, elevating the documentation of human experience to a profound level. Through this album, Hiatt and Douglas unite as iconic figures in American music, crafting love songs, road songs, witty tunes, and poignant ballads that resonate with audiences. These songs, once theirs, now belong to us, offering enduring insights and emotional sustenance.
