Nadja is a duo consisting of multi-instrumentalist Aidan Baker and bassist Leah Buckareff, active since 2005. Their music can be categorized as ambient doom, dreamsludge, or metalgaze. Nadja's distinctive sound blends the atmospheric textures of shoegaze and ambient/electronic music with the heaviness, density, and volume of metal, noise, and industrial genres. In their latest album, "Luminous Rot," the duo maintains their signature overblown/ambient sound while delving into shorter and more tightly structured songs that showcase their interests in metal, post-punk, cold-wave, shoegaze, and industrial music. Thematically, "Luminous Rot" delves into the concept of 'first contact' and the challenges of identifying alien intelligence. The album draws inspiration from authors such as Stanislaw Lem and Cixin Lui, exploring theories on astro-physics, multi-dimensionality, and spatial geometry as seen in "The Three Body Problem." Additionally, the album is influenced by Margaret Wertheim's "A Field Guide To Hyperbolic Space," which discusses mathematician Daina Taimina's use of crochet to illustrate hyperbolic space and geometry.
