Meaning of Life is Clarkson's second documented large-scale foray into soul and R&B music, following her debut single "Miss Independent." Departing from the predominant pop and pop-rock sound of her previous studio releases, she returns to her multi-genre performances reminiscent of her time on American Idol. Inspired by the music of the 1990s and iconic singers such as Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, En Vogue, and Bonnie Raitt, Clarkson aimed for the album to capture a similar essence to the early works of these artists, with a focus on conveying a "soulful" spirit. To bring this vision to life, Clarkson collaborated with a variety of artists, ranging from familiar faces like Jesse Shatkin, Greg Kurstin, Mozella, and Jason Halbert to new project partners like The Monarch, Mick Schultz, Harl, and James Morrison.
