In late 2019, Kurt Wagner was experimenting with something new, eventually revealing itself as Lambchop's Showtunes. By converting simple guitar tracks into MIDI piano tracks, he discovered a new way of creating music. "Suddenly I discovered I could 'play' the piano," he says. "It was a revelation that allowed me to manipulate each note, arranging chords and melodies without the limitations of my previous guitar-based methods." This breakthrough led to a unique sound, reminiscent of show tunes but with a distinct twist reflecting Kurt's artistic vision. Despite not being a fan of the genre, Kurt found inspiration in artists like Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Gershwin, and Carmichael. With newfound skills, he was able to create songs with a similar feel. The addition of longtime friend and collaborator James McNew of Yo La Tengo on upright bass was a natural fit. Kurt had always admired James' artistry and dreamed of working together. "For many years, I've longed for what an upright bass could add to our sound. Now with that, this work was complete," Kurt reflects on the collaboration.
