For their debut album, the band enlisted the help of notable musicians such as drummer Dave Grohl, keyboardist Page McConnell of Phish, guitarist Warren Fitzgerald, and bass player Steven Shane McDonald. The album was produced by The Dust Brothers. Many of the songs on the album originated from early versions featured on their HBO TV series, Tenacious D. The recording sessions commenced with a two-day session at Neil Diamond's ArcAngel studio in Los Angeles, where initial drum tracks were laid down. The band was granted access to the studio due to Diamond's appearance with one of the band members in the film "Saving Silverman." The album cover depicts Black and Gass standing naked beneath the Devil, reminiscent of imagery found on certain Devil tarot cards. The album briefly faced a recall from stores due to its Satanic theme. The band incorporated this imagery into their live performances as well. The album includes bonus track "Pat Riley" (acoustic) - (12th Anniversary).

12th Anniversary Edition of the debut album by Tenacious D, featuring 180 gram high-quality heavyweight vinyl. The album includes the original artwork by Classico Domingo. Additionally, it comes with a free high-quality MP3 album download, including 1 previously unreleased song. Signed copies were available during the acoustic tour. The Cat# with S2 or S3 only appears on the sticker. Later runs omitted the hype sticker and download card. Hidden tracks D2b to D2d are not listed on the release but can be found on the vinyl. Vinyl mastering and pressing credits are taken from the runouts.

Recorded at The Boat (PCP Labs) in Silverlake, CA, with drums recorded at ArchAngel Recording Studio. Mixed at various studios in California and mastered by Tom Baker for Precision Mastering in Hollywood, CA. All songs and comedy nuggets by Tenacious D, published by Time For My Breakfast Music (ASCAP)/Buttflap Music (ASCAP), except "Friendship Test" by Bob Odenkirk, published by Bob Odenkirk Music (ASCAP).
