The Great American Novel

The Great American Novel is a concept album that delves into the theme of Black genius being overlooked, contested, or suppressed, as expressed by vocalist Erik Garlington. The album is structured like a book, with each song serving as a chapter following the protagonist through their 20s. Picture a queer, Black Holden Caufield-type navigating the 2010s. The album is a blend of profound lyrics and heavy music, showcasing Garlington's raw honesty in his songwriting and a fresh musical direction. Drawing inspiration from the music of his youth, including post-hardcore and progressive metal bands, Garlington, along with bassist Natasha Johnson and drummer Elijah Watson of Proper., challenge themselves to explore new sonic landscapes. With production by Bartees Strange and mixing/mastering by Brian DiMeglio, The Great American Novel features fifteen tracks, such as "Huerta" which explores Garlington's Mexican heritage, and "Red, White and Blue" which comments on societal disparities in the United States. The songs encapsulate the album's abrasive, powerful, and emotionally resonant essence. Garlington aimed to surprise listeners with the album's direction while maintaining a sense of catchiness and complexity. The record strips away superficial elements to delve into themes of identity crises, aimlessness, and the harsh realities faced by Black individuals. It serves as a platform to educate listeners on the Black experience and challenges the conventional narratives surrounding Black genius.
