In 2002, during a hiatus of Built to Spill, Doug Martsch gathered local musician friends at his home studio for jam sessions. The group included guitarist John Mullin, BTS Soundman Ian Waters on drums, and Scott Schmaljohn on guitar. Doug played bass. They transitioned from improvising to learning covers. Scott was later replaced by Boise guitarist Ned Evett, a world-class virtuoso and winner of the 2003 North American Guitar competition. Ned is known for inventing the glass-necked fretless guitar, which he plays on the album.
